I need help with Xbox Live?

ok im getting xbox live and uuummm just wanting to know when you are playing a game by yourself and your frend just so happens to say Example"XxTerrellXx425 wants to play skate 3 with you" do yhu have to insert the game in the console or it just automatically plays it self
